DwarfHD.jpg (268506 bytes)Veronika and Stephan decided that I should visit other cities besides Mannheim, so she brought me to Heidelberg, a short drive away from Mannheim. I had the opportunity to see Heidelberg Castle, which you can see way in the background there.

I also visited the großer Faß in Heidelberg, where there is a statue of a local court jester who drank 18 bottles of wine a day, and died after drinking one glass of water. Is there a lesson to be learned there?

After visiting Heidelberg, Veronika brought me to Prague, in the Czech Republic as a wedding guest. Her cousin was getting DwarfWherever2.jpg (331774 bytes)married, and she invited me along. In the ancient city, we saw such wonderful sights such as the Old Town Astronomical Clock, which was built in the 15th century, and tells both Bohemian time (Gothic numbers, with the hours counted after sunset), and normal time (24 hours).

When this clock starts ringing, it is started by death, who tips his hourglass and rings the bell. Later, the Twelve Apostles come out in a parade. A rooster crows, and then the hour is rung.

Of course, sometimes the clock doesn't make any sense sometimes because there was no such thing as Daylight Savings Time in the 15th century.

Veronika also took me to St. Charles Bridge, where many painters, artisans, and street performers line the walkway, along with the statues of different saints and the strolling crowds of tourists and citizens.

Veronika also took me to other places in Prague, such as St. Nicholas Church, which was quite beautiful. I also got to see  the Jewish Quarter, which strangely, was preserved because of Hitler, who wanted to keep a museum of the "exterminated race."DwarfWherever.jpg (265745 bytes)

After spending some days in the beautiful Czech Republic with Veronika, we took the train back to Mannheim, where I rested for several days before heading to my next destination.
